Choosing the right Size

Choosing the right size metal building starts with how you plan to use it today and what you may need in the future. Width and length are important, but most people underestimate height. Make sure you account for vehicle clearance, door openings, and any equipment you may store or use inside. It’s usually more cost-effective to go slightly larger upfront than to outgrow your building later.

Side height is one of the most important measurements because it determines your usable clearance inside the structure. This is measured from the ground to the bottom of the roof frame at the sidewall. For example, if you need a 7′ garage door, you’ll typically want at least an 8′ side height to allow proper clearance for framing and installation.

On a standard 3:12 roof pitch, the center height of the building increases by 1 foot for every 12 inches of width from the sidewall to the peak. So if you have a 20′ wide building, the center will be approximately 3′ taller than the side height. This is important when planning for lifts, overhead storage, or anything that requires extra vertical space in the middle of the structure.

Taking the time to plan your dimensions correctly ensures your building functions the way you expect, avoids clearance issues, and gives you flexibility for future use.
